Latest! Easier version of the game possible. See entry below for 25/Nov/02.

Is CatcheeMonkee the funniest game you have ever seen? Please tell me if it isn't.

This is the funniest game I have ever seen and I laughed for days as I produced it. I used Mark Overmars's Game Maker to produce it and used one or two of his graphics items. The dogs look especially funny.

03/Nov/02 Sunday I began to produce a game with a bouncing ball and thought of how it was like catching a monkey.
04/Nov/02 Monday Having decided on the name, CatcheeMonkee, I wanted to make the ball monkey-shaped and I got monkey pictures on the Internet to use as models.
05/Nov/02 Tuesday I added the 'Hond' sprite from Game Maker's resource folders and by the end of the day had four of them harrying a monkey-shaped ball around the compound, which I had now made of red-tiled walls. I added a monkey screech and a bark for interactions between the monkey and the dogs. That gave a hilarious overall effect, especially because the bouncing of the dogs was like little excited jumps. Thanks to Mark Overmars for free use of the great little sprites he provided with Game Maker.
07/Nov/02 Thursday Got a version of the monkey with a body working well. It seemed even to be challenging the dogs at times. By now the monkey had to get a banana.
08/Nov/02 Friday Added scripts for scoring and an information screen. I'd been laughing at the game for 3 days and felt sure other people would like to play it.
09/Nov/02 Saturday Spent a lot longer on small improvements to the game.
10/Nov/02 Sunday Having decided to distribute the game freely I began this site and placed here some of the artwork I had used to develop the sprites. I got the game onto the site in the early hours of Monday morning.
20/Nov/02Wednesday Just before 9.30 p.m. I scored 1000 at CatcheeMonkee v1.0 which is a four-dog game. It was a bit of a lucky start where the dogs were quite calm and left enough space to move the monkey easily to the banana. I thought I might have to put in another dog. See the 1000 score highscore table below.
25/Nov/02 Monday To make it easier to begin playing I made it possible to remove one or two of the dogs for a penalty of 100 points for each one. It's not a difficult game with 2 dogs in play and it gives good practise with the mouse.
30/Nov/02 Saturday Just after 8 p.m. I got a score of 1000 for the second time. This one was more difficult and needed quite a lot of fast clicking to catch the dogs in tight situations. By now I'd had quite a lot of scores in the 990s. 5 dog CatcheeMonkee looms into sight on the horizon but I won't make that change any time soon.

CatcheeMonkee is a bit like golf - everyone can hit a good shot occasionally and playing CatcheeMonkee you can sometimes get a good score without really knowing how. But in the long run the better players will get the better scores.
If you aren't worried about the points it can be fun to leave CatcheeMonkee running and just watch the action. That's how I got this score.

This is a made-up highscore table from the game. It is quite difficult to get close to 1000.

Below is a highscore table with my genuine score of 1000, made on 20/Nov/02.
